Constipation during pregnancy is a fact of life.

It occurs because your body is producing more progesterone, and the progesterone causes your intestines to swell and slow down.

Constipation is difficult enough to deal with when you’re not pregnant, but when you add it to the symptoms of being pregnant as well, it can make you really uncomfortable.

Here are some tips for relieving pregnancy related constipation (they’re also discussed in the video below):

  • Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Water helps to soften stools, so the more you drink the less you’ll have to deal with being constipated.
  • Increase your fiber intake. Eat more salads, fruit, vegetables, and consider adding prunes to your diet.
  • If the first 2 tips don’t help, take a trip to your local drug store and purchase some Metamucil. This is basically just some extra fiber and can hopefully give your bowels the boost they need to get moving again.
  • If the first 3 tips don’t take care of your problem, then try a stool softener like Colace which is safe to use during pregnancy. Avoid laxatives and or mineral oil because they can be dangerous to the baby.
