Dangers Of Contracting Chicken Pox During Pregnancy

Most of us think of chicken pox as being a childhood disease. Many of us had chicken pox when we were kids.

What are the dangers though if you somehow missed out, and then contract the disease while you're pregnant?

Believe it or not, the dangers of getting chicken pox when you're pregnant are significant:

  • If you contract the disease in the first half of your pregnancy, your baby could be born with skin scarring, eye problems, and limb malformation. However, there is only a 1% to 2% chance of this.
  • If you contract chicken pox a few days before you give birth, your baby could be born with newborn chicken pox.
