Need Gift Ideas For A 2-Year-Old Boy? First-Time Mom Shares Her List Of The Best Gifts For Little Boys

Need a gift for a 2-year-old boy who has everything?

My son is almost 2 and he's fully mobile - excited to be able to explore on his own now!

I thought I’d share the exact items that my almost 2-year-old son will be getting for Christmas this year.

Chances are your friends and family will ask what you recommend they buy for your 2-year-old’s birthday, Christmas, or other special occasion.

If you happen to be a grandparent or friend of the family, then you’re probably wondering which gifts for little boys are most needed at this stage.

As a first-time mom, the following list of gifts for 2-year-old boys is based on my own personal experience buying gifts for my toddler son.

He has outgrown his Quinny Buzz Xtra Stroller. So we started looking for a backup plan to carry his weight should he decide he doesn’t want to walk when we're out & about.

Best Gifts For 2-Year-Old Boys

It’s hard to believe there was a time I thought he might crawl forever. But now he is completely mobile — happily testing his independence and exploring his surroundings.

He continues to grow out of clothes and toys at a rapid pace.

This 10-item wishlist is my best attempt to forecast what we will get the most use out of as my son approaches the 2-year mark:

  1. Radio Flyer 4-in-1 Build A Trike
My son has definitely outgrown his Quinny Buzz Xtra Stroller (pictured above), so this Build-a-Trike by Radio Flyer is a good alternative for walks in the park or attending events. I always like to have a back-up plan to carry his weight — should he decide he doesn’t want to walk anymore. The Radio Flyer trike keeps him engaged with the steering and pedaling aspect. Plus it offers storage, in addition to the different functions for each stage as your toddler grows.

  2. 2-Piece Pajama Sets
Although the 1-piece pajamas are super cute, I find them a bit difficult to navigate with toddler diaper changes. I find that PJs are great for my son to wear around house, and the separate bottoms make diaper changes much easier.
    Short-sleeved 2-piece pajamas for 2-year-old toddlers.  Long-sleeved 2-piece pajamas for 2-year-old toddlers.
  3. Socks
I’ve found that you can never have too many non-slip toddler socks! The non-slip dots on the bottom really help to keep my son from slipping on hardwood floors and other smooth surfaces.

  4. Long- And Short-Sleeve Onesies
We love neutral-colored onesies — especially the Simple Joys by Carter’s Baby onesies. They are a staple in my son’s wardrobe — because they’re perfect to wear as a shirt that stays tucked into a pair of pants since they snap in place at the crotch. They’re also great to wear underneath a sweater for layers. My son still fits into a 24-month size, but I’ve found them difficult to find beyond that size.

  5. Toddler Clothes
I find that most clothing is a welcomed gift — especially when it’s the next size up, because toddlers grow so fast.

  6. Shoes And/Or Boots
Now that my son is quite mobile, boots and shoes are a must! Variety is helpful when it comes to coordinating outfits. It’s always nice to have some neutral colors too — like a basic black, tan, or grey.
With a 2-year-old who's always on the go, it's helpful to have additional shoes to match different outfits.
  7. Little Tikes Basketball Hoop
My son is really starting to practice his coordination, so I thought having a hoop to shoot would be a fun pastime for us. The Little Tikes basketball hoop was a hit! Our nephew also got a Franklin Future Champs basketball hoop for Christmas. The small, portable hoop is designed for “over the door” use, but we were able to set it up quickly and use it on the back of a pub chair. The boys had a great time practicing their shots with the different hoops!

  8. Fisher Price Harley Davidson Tough Trike
My son loved his push car. But now it’s time for something he can steer and eventually pedal for inside the house.

  9. Little People Sit ‘N Stand Skyway
My son was supposed to get this for Christmas, but he discovered it early! Since he is obsessed with cars, it was easier to just let him have it — rather than to have a battle. It’s a neat little car track that converts into 2 different play scenarios and comes with 2 cars.

  10. Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go
Although we received it as a baby shower gift, my son just recently has become fascinated with this particular book — because of all the cars and trucks in it. He also loves to look for “GoldBug” hidden on each of the busy pages!

The Bottom Line…

Every boy at this age is going to have slightly different preferences, but I’m confident that any item on this list will be mom-approved and the perfect solution for a Christmas or birthday gift.

Just remember to ask what size to buy — if you’re planning to gift PJs, clothes, or shoes.

Happy shopping and gift giving!
